2017 May/June Assistant Superintendent Spotlight
Share |

by Chad Parron, Assistant Superintendent, TPC Colorado

You might say to yourself, “This guy looks very familiar”.

He went to Colorado State University and graduated in 2011 with a degree in Environmental Horticulture.  He was the president of the Turf Club for a year and was the community liaison the rest of his time.  He was active with fundraising at the superintendents meetings while at CSU. Maybe you competed with him when he was on Turf Bowl Team with CSU.

Chad Parron…..some know me and I hope to meet many others soon.

When I moved from Ohio I worked at The Bridges G&CC in Montrose with the grow-in process of the project.  After my first year at CSU, I interned at Cornerstone GC in Montrose during the construction and grow-in. I met some talented people while working during the two grow-ins, and what I learned there will help me for years to come.

After graduation, I worked for a landscaping company in Fort Collins, and for the City of Aurora at Fitzsimmons GC.  I was still learning because the superintendent, Chet Wilmes, was a teacher and a manager.   Chet put me under his wing and taught me irrigation techniques, course management lessons, and golf course maintenance practices for a Colorado golf course.  Once we found out that the light rail was planning to expand through Fitzsimmons, I started to look for a new job.  With that thought and action it proved to be a great move for me.

My next professional move was for the PGA TOUR at TPC Las Vegas.  While working at TPC Las Vegas, I learned how to prepare tournament quality playing conditions on a daily basis.  I also traveled with the TPC Network and worked at the Travelers Championship in Hartford, CT, the Greenbrier Classic in White Sulfur Springs, WV, and THE PLAYERS Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.  I was also involved with three tournaments for the Shriners Hospitals for the Children Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, NV.

In 2016 I was the Class C representative on the Southern Nevada Golf Course Superintendents Association Board of Directors.  I was co-chair on the golf committee and enjoyed helping the tournaments run smoothly.

In the summer of 2015, Las Vegas had visitors that owned a property in Berthoud, CO.  They came out to visit TPC Las Vegas and TPC Summerlin to discuss constructing a course in Colorado.  When the owners of the property in Colorado finalized using the TPC brand for the new course, I knew I was going to pursue the move to Berthoud, CO.  PGA TOUR Agronomist, Collier Miller, along with Superintendent, Mike Cooper, offered me a position as the Assistant Superintendent.  I took the offer and now I am back in Colorado loving what I do for work and am closer to my family.

I hope we have the opportunity to share golf course management techniques that will make all of us better in the field. Let’s get together and play a round too.
