President's Message
by Austin Anderson, Superintendent, Grand Elk Golf Club

A lot of us spend our time thinking about the dangers in our soils but we don’t always consider what is right over head. The sun is such a central part of growing turf we sometimes we don’t think that every time we step outside we are taking a chance. The danger we face is the chance of developing skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States.

May is National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. This month is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the importance of skin cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. There is something magical about maintaining turf at high altitude surrounded by our mountainous beauty. Working this elevated and that much closer to the sun we must be at higher risk for skin cancer. Here in Denver we have 25 percent more U.V. in the ambient light than compared to the same light level at sea level. At 10,000 feet you’re at 50 percent more U.V. than at sea level. Ultraviolet light or U.V. is one of the main causes of skin cancer. Of the thousands of people in Colorado who will be diagnosed with some kind of skin cancer this year, about 1,500 will be diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest of the skin cancers.

Many of you reading this may already be proactive in your approach to protection. This message just serves as a reminder to do a monthly Head to Toe self-evaluation. In the month of May there are several locations in the state of Colorado that will be doing Free Skin Cancer screenings. Google SPOT me skin cancer screening for those locations.

Thank you for being a valued member of our association and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming education and golf events.

Don’t be shy re-apply,

Sincerely,

Austin Anderson

2017 RMGCSA President
