2017 May/June Superintendent Spotlight
Share |

by Ben Montoya, Superintendent, Gypsum Creek Golf Course

I started my career in golf course maintenance as a Colorado State University student that just needed a job. I got hired at Link-N-Greens golf course in Fort Collins and I enjoyed every minute of that first job. I was a psychology major at the time and I looked at turf management as a practical degree that could take me a lot of different places. It was refreshing to know that my field of study was preparing me for exactly the type of work I would be doing and the group I studied with showed me what a close knit community we could be for years to come.  I completed a summer internship at the Eisenhower Golf Course and that experience assured me that I had made the right choice to pursue a career in golf.

After a year spent in Cleveland battling disease as a spray tech I moved to Gypsum and started as the assistant at Gypsum Creek  in the spring of 2010. Gypsum Creek was formerly known as the semi-private Cotton Ranch Golf Club until  Town of Gypsum purchased the golf course in 2009. From the very beginning, irrigation was the number one challenge for Gypsum Creek and it has taken up the majority of my time on the course and resulted in more than a few sleepless nights. In 2012 we began the long process of phasing out the old irrigation system and bringing in the new, I was also fortunate enough to be promoted to superintendent that year. Beginning with a new central control system and in-house controller upgrade we then moved to a new pump station and we are currently very close to completion of a full irrigation renovation. It has been an exhilarating and challenging journey but I am excited to see how the course will be transformed with a proper irrigation system.

Outside of the golf course I am enjoying the newlywed life and spending as much time outdoors with my wife and boxer dog as possible. I enjoy participating in a lot of the recreational sports that Eagle County has to offer and you can often find me on the ice playing goalie on multiple rec league hockey squads. Shutting out all of the other superintendents during our biannual hockey turfheads outing is something I look forward to every year.
