I have met a lot of great people!
by Kevin Ullrick, Assistant Superintendent, Murphy Creek Golf Course
I grew up in Iowa and moved to Colorado in the early 70’s. My junior year in high school I ran track and cross country and so did Jim McPhilomy. He asked if I would be interested in working on a golf course after school and on the weekends, I said yes. That was Valley Country Club in 1980. Jim’s dad was the Superintendent at the time. I think his whole family worked at Valley at one point. I also did night watering back in the day. I served under the next three Superintendents Tim Bullard, Gary Grandstaff and John Hoofnagle.

I will never forget one morning we were triplex mowing greens, a young kid pulling and trying to put the flagstick back in while mowing. I won’t mention names but I never heard a man yell so loud. He never did that again. We all have the stories like someone didn’t set the brake on a slope and a Chushman ended up 15 feet in the bottom of the lake. Had to dive in and chain that one up.! It’s funny how we all talk about the weather and our staff good or bad, but at the end of the day we reflect on how our course looks great and we did shine today!

I was out of work for a while after I left Valley Country Club, those were some tough times- it was hard to not be out there each morning. I had a lot of support and endeavored to persevere to get back into the business, but at the same time wondered if I really wanted too. I did! This had been my career for 30 plus years and wanted very much to continue it.

Throughout my quest to find employment I stopped by Springhill golf course and spoke with Barry Dunbar- He said Bobby Lowry at Fitsimmons might be looking for someone. I spoke with Bobby and two days later he called and offered me a position on his staff. I worked at Fitsimmons for a year and then the Assistant’s position opened at Murphy Creek. I was hired at Murphy Creek as the Assistant and that is where I am now working for Eric Strasheim who almost worked for me at Valley C. C. It’s a small world and you can’t take it for granted. Thank you -  Bobby, Eric and the City of Aurora for the opportunity to continue my passion for the golf industry.!  Also, a special thanks to my wife Judy who has supported me over all these years. We love to camp and fish when we can, garden each summer, try new places to eat and especially wait for College Football to come back around “Go Hawkeyes”!

Thank you to all my peers who I know and have worked with over the years all your knowledge and encouragement have made me who I am today.

Here we go again another season. Hope it’s a good one!
