2017 July/August Assistant Superintendent Spotlight

by Ed Cogar, Assistant Superintendent, Legacy Ridge Golf Course

When I was asked to write a spotlight for the reporter this month, it gave me a chance to reflect on all the great people I have met and worked with through the years.  I started my golf course maintenance career when I graduated from Jefferson High School 1986.  My best friend and I thought it would be a great summer job to work at Grand Lake Golf Course and stay at my parent’s cabin for the summer.  What were my parent’s thinking, letting us use their cabin for the summer?  We applied for a job in the Proshop (glad we didn’t get that position!) and ended up working maintenance.  I started as the night irrigation technician for the first of five summers watering the front nine using impacts mounted on quick coupler keys.  After a summer of night watering, I began working on the day crew.

After three summers at Grand Lake Golf Course and off seasons at Lakewood Country Club and the Ranch Country Club, I decided to change my major to Turf Grass Management.  I had no idea you could go to school and learn how to maintain grass.  At the time I wanted a change of scenery, so I enrolled at Catawba Valley Community College in North Carolina and headed east.  I received an Associate’s Degree in Recreation Grounds Management.  After graduation in 1991, I missed Colorado so much and I came home and landed a position as Assistant Superintendent at The Pinery Country Club.  After about a year I went to work for Wadsworth Golf Construction building Fox Hollow Golf Course in 1992.  Since I did not want to leave Colorado and travel with Wadsworth Golf Construction, I got on as a seasonal with the maintenance crew at Fox Hollow.

After a short stay at Fox Hollow, I applied for the Irrigation Technician job at Legacy Ridge in 1994.  I was awarded the position and spent the next four years as the irrigation technician.  In 1998 I was promoted to Assistant Superintendent.  I have been Legacy Ridge for 23 years and wonder where all the time has gone.  It still amazes me how many changes and improvements have been done since opening in 1994.  It never seems to get old trying to improve the course.  I enjoy working at Legacy Ridge and I cannot say enough about the people I work alongside of.  Since the beginning of my tenure of working on golf courses, there have been many people that have shaped my career and my style.  I thank everyone for their support and coaching along the way and would not be the person I am today without them.

In my spare time I enjoy playing golf, working on home improvement projects, and barbequing on my smoker.  I always find time to spend with my wonderful family and enjoy going out with friends.  I am planning a trip to Scotland next year to play golf, enjoy the sights, and drink beer.  If anyone has any must do or must go places in Scotland, let me know!
