President's Message
by Austin Anderson, Superintendent, Grand Elk Golf Club

Hurricane Harvey was the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005, ending a record 12-year drought in which no hurricanes of Category 3 intensity or higher made landfall in the country. In a four-day period, many areas received more than 40 inches of rain as the system meandered over eastern Texas and adjacent waters, causing catastrophic flooding. With peak accumulations of 51.88, Harvey is the wettest tropical cyclone on record in the contiguous United States. The resulting floods inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people, and prompted more than 17,000 rescues.

GCSAA has a Natural Disaster Relief Fund that was created after Hurricane Katrina to help when disaster strikes. The money contributed to this fund will be distributed directly to GCSAA members to assist in compensating for immediate out-of-pocket expenses. RMGCSA and RMEGI will be donating to this fund on our memberships behalf.

In 2005 during Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma I was the Head grounds keeper for the Daytona Beach Cubs Single A Baseball Team. This was my first and only experience with the devastation a hurricane can cause.  I only experienced a couple weeks with no power or running water. I was forced from my beach side home due to storm surges and could not return.  I lived in the clubhouse at the ball field for the remainder of the season. It certainly was a difficult experience. I can only imagine what those in the south are going through with homes completely ravaged by water. There is no returning home.

If you want to directly help our brothers in the south with a donation you can go to the South Texas Chapter gcsaa website or email to donate funds directly to the members affected by this devastation.
